6 facts about Honduras that the news does not say

  1. People are kind and helpful. If you ask for directions, they’ll point you the way.
  2. People smile a lot. Especially when you make eye contact. A bit strange coming from Sweden, where if you smile at people they think there is something wrong with you.
  3. Not everywhere is dangerous. It is only in certain areas, as long as you do not venture there then you will be safe. For instance, in Copan Ruinas, we were able to walk around after 8pm with no fear.
  4. It has a wonderfully diverse cultural history stemming from the Mayan and Lencan cultures. Lenca is another indigenous culture native to southwestern Honduras and El Salvador. They have their own culture and own art. You can really see their influence in the food, same with the Mayan. Lempira, who the money is named after was a Lencan who died fighting the Spaniards in the 1500’s.
  5. Its Bay Islands are nestled within the 2nd largest Coral Reef. So, if you’re in the mood for diving, you can take a ferry or flight to these islands and explore!
  6. It is also along the Pacific Ocean. The majority of the country is in the Caribbean but if you head southwest out of Tegucigalpa you will be at the beach.
